How does upgrading to ACL 2.0 affect my use of Snapshot Manager?
Applicable Products
- QuTS hero
- Snapshot Manager (QuTS hero h5.3.0 or later)
- Storage & Snapshots (QuTS hero h5.2.x or earlier)
Overview
An access-control list (ACL) defines permissions for users and groups on NAS shared folders. Upgrading from ACL 1.0 to ACL 2.0 introduces stricter compatibility requirements for snapshot-related features in Snapshot Manager, such as SnapSync, Snapshot Replica, and importing snapshots. Inconsistent ACL versions between source and destination systems may block certain features.
Details
The following features and functions are blocked under the following ACL version mismatch conditions:
- SnapSync
SnapSync job operations are blocked when the ACL versions of the source and destination are different (e.g., one uses ACL 1.0 and the other ACL 2.0).
Blocked operations include creating, running, and editing SnapSync Jobs, and running performance tests.NoteIf both source and destination systems use ACL 2.0, but only the destination folder is still using ACL 1.0, then SnapSync job operations are still available. When the job runs, the destination folder will be automatically upgraded to ACL 2.0. - Snapshot Replica
Creating and running Snapshot Replica jobs are blocked if the source uses ACL 2.0 and the destination uses ACL 1.0. - Importing snapshots
Users cannot import a snapshot from an ACL 2.0 system to a NAS that uses ACL 1.0.
When you try to perform any of the above operations, the system responds in one of the following ways depending on your firmware version:
| Firmware Version | System Response |
|---|---|
| QuTS hero h5.3.x or earlier | The system blocks the operation and displays a generic error message. |
| QuTS hero h6.0.0 or later | The system blocks the operation and displays a specific error message indicating there is an ACL version mismatch. An event log is also recorded, allowing users to troubleshoot later. |
Solution
- To ensure full compatibility with all snapshot operations, upgrade both source and destination NAS systems to ACL 2.0.NoteQES does not currently support ACL 2.0. If your destination is running QES, you will not be able to upgrade its ACL to version 2.0.
- If upgrading is not possible, use ACL 1.0 for both systems, or consider alternative backup methods.
