QuTS hero h5.0.1
2022-12-20
QuTS hero 5.0.1 brings many new features to enhance the security and improve the performance of your NAS. You can now benefit from higher shared folder capacity, LUN encryption, and much more. See What's New to learn about main features and Other Changes to learn about other features, enhancements, and changes.
We also include fixes for reported issues and provide information about known issues. For details, see Fixed and Known Issues. You should also see Important Notes before updating QuTS hero.
What's New
Up to 5 Petabytes of Storage Capacity for Each Shared Folder
QuTS hero now supports up to 5 petabytes of storage capacity for each shared folder. With this vast storage capacity, RAID Z, self-healing, and other powerful features offered by the ZFS file system, QuTS hero enables enterprises to meet the challenges of the most storage-demanding tasks today, such as big data analysis, edge computing, and artificial intelligence, while ensuring data integrity and data availability.
LUN Encryption for Enhanced Data Security
In addition to shared folder encryption, QuTS hero now also supports LUN encryption. This enables you to control access to your LUNs to further enhance data security. When an encrypted LUN is locked, users are not allowed to connect to the LUN, read or write data to the LUN, map the LUN to an iSCSI target, or take snapshots for the LUN. Each encrypted LUN has a unique key for encrypting data and a unique password for locking the LUN.
After creating an encrypted LUN, you can lock/unlock the LUN and manage encryption settings in iSCSI & Fiber Channel > iSCSI Storage.
Replace a RAID Disk with a Spare Before Potential Failure
Users can now replace a disk in a RAID group with a spare disk any time, without waiting for the system to replace it only after it fails.
As soon as signs of possible disk failure appear—such as when the system slows down due to an unstable disk or disk S.M.A.R.T. errors are detected, or when DA Drive Analyzer predicts a disk will fail soon—users can plan ahead and perform the Replace & Detach action on a disk in Storage > Disks/VJBOD. This action copies data from the problematic disk to a spare disk, and then safely detaches the problematic disk.
Enhanced Transfer Speeds for SMB Encryption
QNAP has improved the performance for SMB 3.0 (Server Message Block) signing and encryption with AES-NI hardware acceleration. QuTS hero 5.0.1 has greatly enhanced the transfer speeds, which can provide better transmission efficiency and satisfy the demands for data security at the same time.
Windows Search Protocol (WSP) Support for Mounted Shared Folders
QuTS hero 5.0.1 now supports Microsoft WSP, which relies on the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. With WSP, users can search NAS shared folders via Windows when an SMB drive is mounted.
With WSP, users can issue queries to remote servers to quickly search files by filename, extension, or other search criteria.
Support for TCG-Enterprise Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs)
In addition to TCG-OPAL, QuTS hero 5.0.1 now also supports TCG-Enterprise SED compliant HDDs and SSDs to further protect your data. A self-encrypting drive (SED) is a drive with a controller that automatically encrypts and decrypts data. Your data on SEDs is protected by an encryption key and cannot be accessed by unauthorized users even if your SEDs are stolen or lost. Thanks to their hardware encryption mechanisms, SEDs do not require CPU resources or encryption software for data protection.
You can use SEDs to create SDE secure storage pools and SED secure static volumes in Storage & Snapshots. To learn more about supported drives, see our Compatibility List.
Disallow USB Connections to Enhance Device Security
USB ports provide a convenient way to connect your NAS with other devices. However, this convenient accessibility can also expose your NAS to secure risks. Starting from QuTS hero 5.0.1, you can choose to disallow all USB devices or only disallow USB storage devices (such as external drives or expansion enclosures). USB blocking adds an extra layer of protection to safeguard your NAS against security threats such as viruses and malware.
To disallow USB connections, go to Control Panel > System > External Device > USB and then select the types of USB devices that you want to block.
Other Changes
Control Panel
When creating users, you can now choose to force users to change their password upon their first login.
You can now specify a custom UID for a non-administrator when creating a user or editing user settings.
QTS now supports access protection settings for RTRR and Rsync protocols in Control Panel > System > Security.
Enhanced firmware update features in Control Panel to provide more options and clearer notifications. You can now configure more settings for update actions, update schedule, and firmware update types.
The default UPS policy is now set to "auto-protection mode" after NAS initialization.
QTS now displays a warning message in Control Panel > System > Hardware > Hardware Resources when you select a graphics card installed on a PCIe slot that does not support PCIe passthrough.
When importing users, you can now choose to require imported users to change their password upon their first login.
QuTS hero now provides an option in Control Panel to disable the power button. This prevents unexpected shutdown when users press the power button by accident.
You can now create a one-time power schedule.
To prevent malicious usernames and to ensure device security, QuTS hero no longer allows usernames that contain the following characters: { } $ and the space character.
File Station
Updated CloudConvert API to v2. File Station now supports displaying CloudConvert API key status.
Added support for International Components for Unicode (ICU) library to enhance sorting consistency in various languages.
Modified UI design and workflow in File Station to enhance user experience.
File Station now displays storage information on the volume context menu (instead of the file context menu) for better usability.
You can now select and download multiple files via a share link. You can now also preview shared files with thumbnails.
Help Center
Enhanced the user interface design of Help Center.
Network & Virtual Switch
Network & Virtual Switch now displays the maximum transmission unit (MTU) of network interfaces.

Important Notes
• Storage pools created in QuTS hero h5.0.1 (or later versions) cannot be imported to QuTS hero h5.0.0 (or earlier versions).
• Out-of-the-box QuTS hero h5.0.1 automatically installs security updates by default. Nevertheless, if you update the firmware from QuTS hero h5.0.0 to h5.0.1, QuTS hero will keep your existing firmware update settings. We recommend checking your firmware update settings in Control Panel > Firmware Update.
• Removed support for the following developer tools: Python 2, Node.js v4, Node.js v6, Node.js v8, and Ruby on Rails.
• Removed support for the following apps or tools: Mono, Perl, and AlarmClock. We recommend running these apps or tools using Container Station if needed.
