Snapshot Replica Limitation After Upgrading to QuTS hero h5.3

Last modified date: 2025-09-09

Applicable Products

QuTS hero h5.1.x, h5.2.x, h5.3

Scenario

You want to know whether Snapshot Replica jobs work between NAS devices running different versions of QuTS hero, specifically when upgrading one or more devices to h5.3.

Limitations

  • h5.2.x/h5.1.x → h5.3 (source to destination): Supported. Snapshot Replica jobs can send snapshots from an older version (h5.1.x or h5.2.x) to a NAS running h5.3.
  • h5.3 → h5.2.x/h5.1.x (source to destination): Not supported. You cannot replicate snapshots from a NAS running h5.3 to a NAS running h5.2.x or h5.1.x.

Note: After upgrading a NAS to h5.3, it will not be able to replicate snapshots to another NAS running h5.2.x or h5.1.x. The older systems cannot accept Snapshot Replica jobs from h5.3.

Local snapshots compatibility

  • Existing local snapshots remain usable after upgrading from h5.1.x or h5.2.x to h5.3.
  • Snapshots created in h5.3 can still be restored after downgrading to h5.2.x.
  • Local snapshots are bidirectionally compatible between h5.1.x, h5.2.x, and h5.3.

Recommendations

  1. Before upgrading to h5.3, review your current Snapshot Replica jobs:
    • In Storage Manager, navigate to Snapshots > Replica Jobs.
    • Check if any jobs replicate from a NAS using h5.3 to a NAS with an earlier version. If so, plan to reconfigure these jobs after upgrading.
  2. For best compatibility, upgrade both the source NAS and the destination NAS to h5.3 before configuring new Snapshot Replica jobs.
  3. Before upgrading, always perform a full data backup to prevent possible data loss due to unrelated issues.
  4. If you must downgrade from h5.3 to h5.2.x, snapshots created in h5.3 remain restorable in h5.2.x.
