Symptom

Hikvision cameras can mount a NAS SMB shared folder, but when trying to format the folder inside the camera interface, it fails with the error:

“Formatting failed. Please replace memory card & try again.”

Solution

Hikvision cameras require the NAS SMB folder to be completely empty before formatting.

If system-generated folders like @Recycle or @Recently-Snapshot exist, the camera will treat them as existing data and block formatting.

Please follow the steps to make the target share empty:

1. Disable Recycle Bin:

  (1) Go to Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders.

  (2) Select the recording folder > Edit Properties.

  (3) Uncheck Enable Recycle Bin.

2. Disable Snapshot Directory:

  (1) Go to Control Panel > Storage & Snapshots > Global Settings (at the top right with a gear logo)

  (2) Go to Snapshot tab

  (3) Uncheck Make snapshot directory (@Recently-Snapshot) visible in share folder root.

3. Ensure Folder Is Empty:

  (1) Verify that the recording folder has no hidden files or subfolders.

  (2) If needed, manually delete existing system folders.

4. Retry on Camera:
