How to convert the storage driver from overlay to overlay2 in Container Station?
Last modified date:

Applicable Products
Container Station 3.0.8
Overview
Important
The original overlay storage driver has been deprecated and removed from Container Station since version 3.0. While Container Station on some systems might still support overlay in later versions, this support is temporary and will eventually be removed.
To ensure continued functionality and access to conversion assistance, please update to Container Station 3.0.8 or later. This update includes a storage driver check and will provide guidance on migrating to the recommended overlay2 driver if necessary.
Note
In case your Container Station utilizes a legacy storage driver, a prominent warning indicator will be displayed in the top banner alongside a pop-up reminder dialog for enhanced visibility.
Prerequisites
- Ensure all containers and applications running within Container Station are stopped. This prevents any data corruption or unexpected behavior during the conversion process.
- Create backups or exports of all your container-related data.
- Remove existing images and containers after backing up or exporting container-related data.
- For Docker Compose backups and in-depth data restoration procedures, consult the official Docker documentation on application rebuilding or contact the respective application developers for specific guidance. For details, see https://docs.docker.com.
- During the conversion process of the storage driver from overlay to overlay2, the existing container data may need to be restructured or reconfigured, which could involve removing and re-importing containers. Backing up containers before conversion ensures that no data is lost, and restoring them afterward allows you to seamlessly transition to the new storage driver without compromising the operational state of the containers. For details, see How to back up and restore containers in Container Station.
Procedure
- Open Container Station.
- Locate the Legacy driver update required notification.NoteThe notification appears only for Container Stations using Docker Engine 24.0 (and later), near the application name in the title bar. This notification can serve as a reminder to proceed with the update.
- Click Update Now.
The Overlay Storage Driver Update Required window appears. - Click Convert Driver.
The Legacy Storage Driver Conversion window appears. - Click Start.
The Prerequisites window appears. - Click the checkbox next to the statement confirming you have backups of your containers, images, and volumes.
