How do Qfile Pro and QuMagie handle duplicate file names when uploading files from my mobile device?
Applicable Products
- Qfile Pro (Android, iOS)
- QuMagie (Android, iOS)
Overview
When uploading photos or videos from your mobile device to your QNAP NAS using Qfile Pro or QuMagie, duplicate file names may occur if a file with the same name already exists in the target folder. Both apps provide options to manage duplicates, but their behaviors differ depending on your chosen settings and the upload scenario.
Details
How duplicate file names are detected
- Skip:The system checks for duplicates based on three attributes:
- File name
- File size
- Modification time
- Rename: Only the file name is checked. If a file with the same name exists, the new file is uploaded and renamed automatically.
Qfile Pro
- When manual uploading, if a duplicate file name is detected, Qfile Pro provides the following options:
- Overwrite: Replace the existing file with the new upload.
- Rename: Upload the new file with a modified name (e.g.,
IMG_0001-Copy (1).jpg
). - Skip: Do not upload the duplicate file.
- You can apply your choice to individual files or all duplicates in the current session.
- For automatic uploads:
- If set to Skip, a message appears in Background Tasks > Completed: "Skip. This file already exists...".
- If set to Rename, duplicate files are uploaded with "-Copy (1)" appended to the file name. No notification appears.
QuMagie
- When manual uploading, if a duplicate is detected, QuMagie uploads the file and appends "-1" to the file name (e.g.,
IMG_0001-1.jpg
). - For automatic uploads:
- If set to Skip, QuMagie will not upload files that match all three attributes (name, size, modification time). A message appears in the completed tasks.
- If set to Rename, QuMagie uploads the file and appends "-1" to the file name (e.g.,
IMG_0001-1.jpg
).
Important notes
- Overwriting a file will permanently replace the existing file. This action cannot be undone.
- If you want to keep both versions, use the Rename option or manually rename files before uploading.
- Consider backing up important files before choosing to overwrite.
