In order to back up data from a Synology NAS to a QNAP NAS via rsync, you must enable the rsync server in Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS) and also configure SSH service on the QNAP NAS. After these services are configured, you can go to the Synology NAS and create a backup task in Hyper Backup.

Please see the following steps in order.

A. Configure the rsync server in HBS 3 on the QNAP NAS.
  1. Log in to the QNAP NAS as an administrator.
  2. Install HBS 3.
    1. Open App Center.
    2. Click the search icon.
    3. Enter "HBS 3 Hybrid Backup Sync".
The HBS application appears in the search results.
    4. Click Install.
  3. Open HBS 3.
  4. Go to Services > Rsync Server.
  5. Enable the rsync server.

  6. Ensure the port number is "873".
  7. Click Apply.
B. Configure SSH service on the QNAP NAS.

Transferring data to a QNAP NAS via rsync requires establishing an SSH connection. Ensure SSH service is configured properly on the QNAP NAS.

  1. On the QNAP NAS, open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Network & File Services > Network Access > Service Binding.
  3. Select Enable Service Binding.
  4. Enable SSH service on the network interface you plan to transfer your data through.
  5. Click Apply.
C. Create a backup task in Hyper Backup on the Synology NAS.

To ensure the backup is successful, you must configure specific values for certain settings when creating the backup task. The relevant steps are included as follows.

  1. Log in to the Synology NAS.
  2. Install Hyper Backup.
    1. Open Package Center.
    2. Go to All Packages.
    3. Locate Hyper Backup.
    4. Click Install.
  3. Open Hyper Backup.
  4. Click the plus icon in the left panel and select Data backup task.
    The Backup Wizard window opens.
  5. Select rsync copy (single-version) as the backup destination.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Next to Server type, select rsync-compatible server.
  8. Next to Transfer encryption, select On.
    Important
Transferring data to a QNAP NAS via rsync requires going through an SSH connection, which is encrypted. You must enable transfer encryption to ensure you can transfer data from your Synology NAS to your QNAP NAS.

  9. Click Next.
  10. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the wizard.

After the backup task is created, you can start backing up your data to the QNAP NAS.
