How to prevent the TP-Link Deco router system ports from being disabled when connected to a QNAP switch?

QNAP managed switches

Root Cause

TP-Link Deco routers use mesh technology to connect to other Deco routers and access points. When the routers change from Wi-Fi backhaul to Ethernet backhaul, a short loop may occur in the network, which causes the switch using loop protection to disable router ports.

Recommendation

To avoid disabling router ports, the following are recommended:

Recommendation 1

Create the Ethernet backhaul prior to creating the Wi-Fi backhaul.

  1. Connect the Ethernet cable between all the Deco routers to the QNAP switch first.
  2. Power on the QNAP switch.
  3. Power on the Deco router once the switch finishes booting.

The switch is unable to detect the loop if you create the Ethernet backhaul first and the router uses the Wi-Fi backhaul as a backup.

Recommendation 2

Disable loop detection temporarily when the routers switch to Ethernet backhaul.
