Why does QuTScloud fail to start up when running as a virtual machine?

Release date: 2020-09-24

QNAP has successfully tested the following hypervisors for running QuTScloud as a virtual machine (VM). Each hypervisor was tested using its default settings:

  • QNAP Virtualization Station v3.4.4 (QTS 4.4.3.0702)
  • VMware ESXi 6.5.0 & 6.7.0
  • Hyper-V (Windows Server 2019)
  • KVM 1.5.1 (ubuntu 18.04)
  • KVM 2.2.1 (ubuntu 20.04)
  • Proxmox v6.2–4

If the QuTScloud VM is unable to start up, check the following:

  • The QuTScloud disk image provided by QNAP should be attached to the virtual machine as the boot disk. For maximum compatibility, attach the boot disk as an IDE drive. You can attach the data disk (used by storage volume pools) as an IDE, SATA, or VirtIO drive.
  • QuTScloud will automatically power off if it detects that it is running on a non-hypervisor platform. Ensure that the hypervisor pattern is not hidden in the hypervisor configuration.
  • The architecture of QuTScloud is based on Linux. Select “Linux” instead of “generic” if the hypervisor has OS type in its configuration. QuTScloud will not boot on virtualized hardware that is not compatible with generic Linux architecture.
