How do I swap spare disk roles after an automatic RAID rebuild in an HA cluster?
Applicable Products
- QuTS hero h5.3.0 or later
- Storage Manager
Scenario
I have a high-availability (HA) cluster where after a disk failure on one of the nodes, a RAID group and its parent storage pool became degraded. The following occurred:
- The system automatically used a designated spare disk to rebuild the degraded RAID group.
This converted the spare disk into a data disk and restored the storage pool. - I replaced the failed disk with a new disk.
- The system automatically made the new disk the new spare disk.
This caused inconsistent disk configuration between the two nodes of my cluster.
How can I safely swap the roles of the data and spare disks to make the disk configuration between nodes consistent again?
Instructions
The following steps allow you to safely swap roles between a data disk and a spare disk.
- These steps can only be performed in Storage Manager, which is only available on the active node.
- You can manage disks on both nodes in Storage Manager, so there is no need to perform a switchover.
- If you need to perform these steps on both nodes, perform them on one node at a time.
- Log in to the active node as an administrator.
- Go to Storage Manager > Disks > Device.
- Optional: In the top-right corner, click the dropdown menu to select the other node in your HA cluster.
- Select the data disk to be replaced with a spare disk.
- Click Action, and then select Replace.
A new window opens. - Select Set as spare disk.
- Enter your account password.
- Click OK.
The system transfers all data from the selected disk to the spare disk.
The spare disk replaces the selected disk as a member of its RAID group, and the selected disk becomes the new spare disk.
