How do I swap spare disk roles after an automatic RAID rebuild in an HA cluster?

Scenario

I have a high-availability (HA) cluster where after a disk failure on one of the nodes, a RAID group and its parent storage pool became degraded. The following occurred:

  1. The system automatically used a designated spare disk to rebuild the degraded RAID group.
This converted the spare disk into a data disk and restored the storage pool.
  2. I replaced the failed disk with a new disk.
  3. The system automatically made the new disk the new spare disk.
This caused inconsistent disk configuration between the two nodes of my cluster.

How can I safely swap the roles of the data and spare disks to make the disk configuration between nodes consistent again?

Instructions

The following steps allow you to safely swap roles between a data disk and a spare disk.

Note
  • These steps can only be performed in Storage Manager, which is only available on the active node.
  • You can manage disks on both nodes in Storage Manager, so there is no need to perform a switchover.
  • If you need to perform these steps on both nodes, perform them on one node at a time.
  1. Log in to the active node as an administrator.
  2. Go to Storage Manager > Disks > Device.
  3. Optional: In the top-right corner, click the dropdown menu to select the other node in your HA cluster.
  4. Select the data disk to be replaced with a spare disk.
  5. Click Action, and then select Replace.
    A new window opens.
  6. Select Set as spare disk.
  7. Enter your account password.
  8. Click OK.
The system transfers all data from the selected disk to the spare disk.
The spare disk replaces the selected disk as a member of its RAID group, and the selected disk becomes the new spare disk.
