Why do I see sparks when I connect the DC connector to the power input of the device?
Applicable Products
QTS, QSS, and QuRouter devices that use power adapters
Overview
Don't be alarmed if you see sparks or hear a crackling sound when you connect or disconnect the DC connector to the power outlet of the device. This may occur occasionally when the contact area of the pins on the DC connector is not large enough, therefore creating an electrical surge instantaneously for a few seconds.
Answer
To avoid this issue, QNAP recommends the following solutions:
Connecting the device to a power outlet
- Connect the DC connector of the adapter to the power input of the device.
- Connect the AC connector of the adapter to the AC power outlet.
Disconnecting the device from a power outlet
- Disconnect the AC connector of the adapter from the AC power outlet.
- Disconnect the DC connector of the adapter from the power input of the device.

The Internal Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) defined three safety classes for power supplies: Class I, Class II, Class III. These classes help identify different methods for preventing the user from being subjected to hazardous voltages from the input power source when using a power supply.
Class III defines equipments in which protection against electric shocks relies upon supply from SELV (Separated or safety extra-low voltage) circuits and in which hazardous voltages are not generated. The voltage in accessible parts of these circuits should not exceed 42.4 V peak or 60 V d.c., for more than 200 ms. For more details, see the IEC 60950-1 publication.
