Why did my NAS fail to join an AD domain with a "Failed to lookup DC info for domain over RPC" error?

Symptom

Some devices receive an error when connecting to an Active Directory (AD) domain using the Active Directory Wizard. The following error message displays in the generated debug log:

Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'domain.local' over rpc: The object was not found.


Recommendation

This error occurs if the NAS is unable to communicate with the AD domain using the RPC protocol. To allow communication, you must unblock port 445 and port 139. After these ports are unblocked, retry the connection with the Active Directory Wizard.
