How do I troubleshoot slow Time Machine backup speeds to my NAS?
Applicable Products
- All NAS running with QTS or QuTS hero
- Time Machine Backup Service
Scenario
I used my NAS for media streaming without issues. Recently, I started using it as a Time Machine backup destination for my MacBook over Wi-Fi, and noticed the backup transfer speed drops to around 10 Mbps.
Analysis
- Network connection: Wi-Fi speeds are typically slower and less stable than wired Ethernet, especially for large transfers such as initial Time Machine backups.
- Initial backup size: The first Time Machine backup is often large, so it can take considerable time to complete over a wired connection.
Solution
- Connect with Ethernet:
- Connect your MacBook directly to your network using an Ethernet cable (USB or Thunderbolt adapters can help if needed).
- Run the Time Machine backup again and observe speed improvements.
- If the backup runs much faster, Wi-Fi speed is the limiting factor.
- Once the initial backup has completed, incremental backups over Wi-Fi should be much faster.
- If speeds remain slow:
- Check your NAS for firmware updates, and ensure both the NAS and your Mac are up-to-date.
- Restart your NAS and router to refresh network connections.
Note: The first backup can be very large, and may take hours to complete, especially over Wi-Fi. If you continue having performance issues even with a wired connection, review your NAS network settings or contact QNAP support for assistance.
