Direct Connection Tests (where you connect your NAS directly to your computer using an Ethernet cable) are helpful for diagnosing issues such as:

  • File Explorer/Finder or Qfinder Pro can't find your NAS. Direction Connection removes all other network devices located between the NAS and computer to see if the issue is NAS or network related.
  • Data transfer speeds are slower than expected. The download speed in a Direct Connection (using Gigabit Ethernet) is around 100MB/s, and this baseline can be used to see if your network environment is impacting file transfer speeds.
Steps
  1. Directly connect your NAS and computer using an Ethernet cable.

  2. Configure a Static IP address on your computer. The IP address/Submask/Gateway should be 169.254.100.99 /255.255.0.0/Leave_Empty

    • On Windows, refer to the instructions here.
    • On a Mac, refer to this guide.
  3. Download and install Qfinder Pro.

  4. Run Qfinder Pro and open your NAS in File Explorer/Finder.

  5. Check your file transfer speed by copying a file to/from your computer and NAS.
