QNAP Releases ZFS-based QuTS hero h4.5.2: Supports Real-time SnapSync, and QSAL to Prevent Simultaneous Multi-SSD Failures

Taipei, Taiwan, 16. April 2021 - QNAP® Systems, Inc. (QNAP) today officially released the QuTS hero h4.5.2 NAS operating system. Featuring numerous improvements and enhancements over the previous version, QuTS hero h4.5.2 adds support for real-time SnapSync that realizes data synchronization for critical data backup, and the patented QSAL (QNAP SSD Antiwear Leveling) algorithm that prevents simultaneous multi-SSD failures for greater data protection and system reliability.
Ensure well-rounded data protection with real-time SnapSync
QuTS hero is based on the 128-bit ZFS file system that emphasizes data integrity and features data self-healing, making it perfect for business data storage that require proactive data protection. To provide uncompromising disaster recovery and protection from ransomware, QuTS hero supports near-limitless snapshots to accomplish well-rounded snapshot versioning. Copy-on-write technology makes snapshot creation almost instantaneous without affecting ongoing data writing. The advanced block-based real-time SnapSync immediately synchronizes changes to data with the destination storage to ensure that the primary and secondary NAS always keep the same data, fulfilling real-time disaster recovery with minimal RPO and no data loss.
Prevent simultaneous multi-SSD failures with QSAL
As SSD adoption grows, businesses must prepare for the greater risk of data loss due to the difficulty in recovering data from dead SSDs. The QSAL algorithm regularly detects the lifespan and durability of an SSD RAID. When SSD lifespan is in its final 50%, QSAL will dynamically distribute the over-provisioning space to guarantee each SSD has enough time to rebuild before it reaches end of life. This can effectively prevent simultaneous multi-SSD failures and improves the reliability of the entire system. QSAL has little effect on storage space utilization but significantly improves overall data protection for flash storage.
More QuTS hero key features:
- Main memory read cache (L1 ARC), SSD second-level read cache (L2 ARC), and ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) for synchronous transactions with power failure protection boost performance and security.
- Supports up to 1 petabyte capacity for individual shared folders.
- Supports native handling of standard RAID levels and additional ZFS RAID layouts (RAID Z), and flexible storage pool architecture. RAID Triple Parity and Triple Mirror deliver higher levels of data protection.
- Block-based inline data deduplication, compression, and compaction reduce file sizes to conserve storage space and optimize performance, while also preserving SSD lifespan.
- Supports WORM Auto-committing. WORM (Write Once, Read Many) is used to avoid modification of saved data. Data in WORM shared folders can only be written, and cannot be deleted or modified to ensure data integrity.
- AES-NI hardware acceleration increases data signing and encryption/decryption efficiency over SMB 3.
- Provides an App Center with install-on-demand apps to enable NAS to host virtual machines and containers, conduct local/remote/cloud backups, create cloud storage gateways, and much more.
