Data storage is becoming more and more delicate task to do. In one hand because of the bigger amounts of daily data and in the second because of the data lastingness required by the government. Qnap is producing quality NAS systems for quite a long time.QNAP TS-509 Pro already got a golden award in our IT magazine when we tested all NAS servers. Now we are reviewing TS-439 Pro and TS-219P. At TS-439 we like two ethernet interfaces, data transfer is fast, but the booting time is long almost 4 minutes. The truth is we don't usualy need to reboot it often. Even when all four disks are fully operating together with the ventilator, the noise is not too big. TS-219P is made mostly for home use, but it still supports iSCSI. The transfer speeds are almost the same as at TS-439 Pro. They are both using the same user interface and we like the additional options and expansions.

When you look at the actual needs of a small or medium business, a full blown NOS is not what is always required along with the associated costs of on-going maintenance, the inevitable flood of software patching, hardware compatibility, device drivers, component failures, etc. With the ability to integrate with backup software from industry leaders there are definitely places where I would have recommended using the QNAP NAS over and above the traditional server model, without doubt or hesitation.

Whilst it is not apples to apples comparison when you look at full featured NOS such as Netware or Windows Server, the reality is that the QNAP can replace a server in some businesses and remove the need for a high level technical resource. A particularly important and usually overlooked feature is the online expansion or RAID migration ability of the QNAP NAS, in some environments it removes the need to perform a full system backup, rebuild and expand the RAID set then perform a system restore.

The front panel, extremely easy to use is composed by a 2-line display, 2 buttons and 4 status LEDs that are sufficient to configure the device without using a PC. The four front bays, protected by key, are near the power button and a USB backup port with relative button. On the back-side there are four more USB ports, two RJ-45 double Gigabit LAN ports, two eSATA and one VGA port currently "reserved" for maintenance.

QNAP also offer special feature called on-line capacity expansion without lossing of data. For example in case you need change 3 x 500GB drives to 3 x 1TB drives in RAID 5. QNAP supports also on-line RAID expansion. For example you can change RAID 1 to RAID 5 after adding fourth drive. Transfer speed on the Gigabit network is 18 MB / s, and power consumption is 25 W in sleep mode. QNAP will also introduce new user interface based on AJAX. I'm glad to see a very detailed manual in russian. The software has become more diverse. We haven't attracted attention to the fact that this is the first NAS with the latest Intel Atom onboard. This CPU is a bit slower than the Intel Celeron used in the TS-509, though both NAS’es work fast. Atom's advantage is its lower power consumption. At night, when the NAS downloads data from the Internet the TS-439 Pro consumes not more than 40-50 W which looks great.

Features 5/5 Wow, really, wow! For a tiny box the TS-439 is packed full of features. RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 5 + spare, and JBOD support with four HDDs. Full on Web Server, MySQL server, and many many other features. All it's missing is the kitchen sink. Performance 5/5 Like with the feature set, QNAP did not leave performance at home with the TS-439. It brings it, and brings it hard. With the TS-439 connected over Gigabit, you get FireWire 800-like speeds, and even better performance can be expected while using both Gigabit ports. Let's also not forget to mention that the online interface is very fast and responsive.
