Why did only the active node in my HA cluster get updated in a scheduled firmware update?

Last modified date: 2025-09-09

Applicable Products

  • QuTS hero h5.3.0
  • High Availability Manager 1.0 or later

Cause

In QuTS hero h5.3.0, when using the scheduled firmware update feature in an HA cluster, only the active node will be updated at the scheduled time. The passive node will not be updated automatically, and a rolling update will not occur as expected.

This issue has been fixed in QuTS hero h5.3.1 and later versions.

Solution

If you have already scheduled a firmware update in QuTS hero h5.3.0 and only the active node’s firmware has been updated, please download the latest firmware file from Download Center and manually update the firmware in Control Panel. The system will then properly execute a rolling update to ensure both nodes are updated to the same firmware version.

  1. Go to https://download.qnap.com.
  2. Search and download the latest QuTS hero firmware file for your NAS model.
  3. On the active node, go to Control Panel > System > Firmware Update > Manual Installation.
  4. Click Browse… to upload the firmware file.
  5. Click Update System.
  6. Click OK.
Important

We strongly recommend updating the firmware on both NAS devices in your HA cluster to QuTS hero h5.3.1 or later to ensure that rolling updates work correctly with scheduled firmware updates.
