Can I use the 169.254.0.0/16 network segment for my QNAP device configuration?
Applicable Products
All NAS series
Details
The 169.254.0.0/16 network range is a reserved block of IP addresses defined in standards RFC 3927 and RFC 6890. These addresses are automatically assigned to devices on an Ethernet network (IEEE 802) when they cannot obtain an IP address through a DHCP server and manual configuration is not preferred.
While your QNAP device might be able to use an address from this range, it is not recommended for static IP configuration. This is because 169.254.0.0/16 addresses are for temporary, automatic assignments and may not be accessible from other devices on your network.
Recommendation
The following private network ranges are recommended for static IP assignment on your device.
- Class A: 10.0.0.0/8 (usable range: 10.0.0.1 - 10.255.255.254)
- Class B: 172.16.0.0/12 (usable range: 172.16.0.1 - 172.31.255.254)
- Class C: 192.168.0.0/16 (usable range: 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.255.254)
It is recommended that you choose a specific IP address within the usable range of your chosen network class to avoid conflicts with any existing devices on your network.
