Why can’t I connect to my QNAP NAS from browser after updating to macOS 14 Sonoma or 15 Sequoia?

Last modified date: 2025-09-11

Applicable Products

All QNAP NAS models running QTS or QuTS hero, when accessed via Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge on macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, or later.

Explanation

Starting from macOS 14 Sonoma (released September 2023) and continuing in macOS 15 Sequoia, Apple introduced a stricter Local Network privacy control that applies to all apps, including web browsers such as Chrome, Safari, and Edge. If the “Local Network” permission for the browser is disabled in System Settings > Privacy & Security, the browser will be blocked from discovering or connecting to NAS devices via local IP address or hostname, even if other network functions work normally.

Solution

  1. On your Mac, open System Settings (or System Preferences if using macOS Monterey or earlier).
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. In the sidebar, click Local Network.
  4. Find your browser (Chrome, Safari, or Edge) in the list.
  5. Enable the toggle to allow local network access.
  6. Restart your browser and try connecting to your NAS again.
