What are the differences between Crash consistent and Application consistent when creating block-based LUN Snapshots?

When take a snapshot on block-based LUN, there are options for Application consistent and Crash consistent. What are the differences between Crash consistent and Application consistent of Snapshot type?

[Application consistent]:
snapshots taken using Snapshot Agent ensure that applications and VMs running on the LUN can be restored to a consistent state. Snapshot Agent tells the server using the LUN to flush data in memory, logs, and pending I/O transactions to the LUN (for Windows Server), or to take a virtual machine snapshot (for VMware). The snapshot can then record both data and application data.

[Crash consistent]
snapshots will not contact the remote server before taking the snapshot as they are just standard NAS snapshots.
