How do I migrate my Windows Server VMs from QNAP Intel hardware to QNAP AMD hardware?

- QNAP NAS devices with Intel and AMD processors
Overview
You can migrate Windows Server virtual machines (VMs) between QNAP NAS devices with Intel and AMD processors using Virtualization Station. Both OVF and QVM formats are supported. This process allows Windows Server VMs to operate normally after migration. Backing up important data before starting is highly recommended.
Procedure
- Shut down the VM on the Intel-based NAS:
- Ensure the Windows Server VM is powered off before starting the migration process.
- Export the VM from the Intel-based NAS:
- Open Virtualization Station on your Intel NAS.
- Select the Windows Server VM you want to migrate.
- Click Export and choose either *.qvm or *.ovf format.
- (Figure 1: VM export interface on Intel NAS)

- Transfer the exported VM file to the AMD-based NAS:
- Copy the exported *.qvm or *.ovf file to your AMD NAS. You can use network file transfer (such as SMB/CIFS share), File Station, or external storage.
- Import the VM on the AMD-based NAS:
- Open Virtualization Station on your AMD NAS.
- Click Import and select your *.qvm or *.ovf file.

- Start and verify the VM:
- Power on the imported VM.
- Verify that Windows Server starts normally and the system operates as expected. Test critical functions before deleting the original VM on the Intel-based NAS.
Limitations
- This procedure is verified for Windows Server VMs. If migrating other operating systems, thoroughly test VM compatibility before production use.
- Ensure both NAS devices are running compatible Virtualization Station versions.
- Some advanced VM configurations or hardware-specific drivers may require additional adjustments after migration.
- We recommend creating a backup of the VM before migration to prevent accidental data loss.
