Why does my NAS warn me that my connection is not private?
Applicable Products
QTS, QuTS hero, QuTScloud
Overview
If connecting to a network address with HTTPS, and that network address does not possess a valid SSL certificate, then your browser will issue a security warning that the connection is not private. A connection that is not private means that the network communication between network device and your device is not encrypted and could therefore be observed from a 3rd party if that party had sufficient access to the network.
This tutorial explains how to respond to this warning.
Workarounds
If connecting to an IP address (for example: 192.168.1.1)
If you are using HTTPS to connect to your NAS with a plain IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1), then your browser will warn you that your connection is not private. In this case, the warning can be ignored. The browser is issuing this warning because of the possible security implications of a missing SSL certificate. However, your NAS is a trusted device of yours, so connecting to it does not pose a security threat. It is possible, but not recommended, to issue an SSL certificate to a plain IP address. For details on issuing an SSL certificate to a plain IP address, see Using an IP Address in an SSL Certificate.
Some browsers, such as Google Chrome, allows users to bypass security warnings. For details, see How to bypass “Your connection is not private” in Chrome browser when connecting to a NAS in the local network by HTTPS connection?
If connecting to a fully qualified domain name (for example: qnaptest.myqnapcloud.com)
If you are using a fully qualified domain name to connect to your NAS, in other words you are using the Internet and not your local network to connect to your NAS, then we recommend installing an SSL certificate on your NAS to ensure your network traffic is secure. To install an SSL certificate on your NAS, you can use one of the following SSL certificate services:
If SSL certificate is already installed but still showing connection is not private
Ensure to update QTS SSL Certificate to the latest version (version 2.2.47 or later) from the NAS App Center, and renew the certificate if they have expired.
