Ransomware has become a rising threat against business users because it targets computers and network-based devices. Consequently, snapshot is a must-have feature for modern storage systems. QNAP's storage-level snapshot* helps protect your folders, files, and iSCSI LUN. In the event of malware attack or unwanted changes, your stored data can be reverted and restored to a specific point in time.
Check out the difference between QNAP's snapshot feature compared to the other brands' NAS on the market.
| Snapshot Application | Other brands that use BtrFS (S-brand, N-brand) | Other brands (W-brand, B-brand) | |
| iSCSI LUN (Block-level) | |||
| iSCSI LUN (File-level with Thin Provisioning) | Protected by the volume-based snapshot, the process is done within seconds |
||
| iSCSI LUN (File-level with Thick Provisioning) | Protected by the volume-based snapshot, the process is done within seconds |
Takes significantly longer time. Not ideal for business applications |

If you are going to deploy a centralized storage server to serve, store and share different types of files and data in a multi-client environment, you can improve your NAS performance with Qtier. Some data is frequently used, some might just be kept as long-term backup or archived. Qtier will enable your QNAP NAS to automatically allocate the data to the right place by how often the data is being accessed. The active hot data will be allocated to the high-performance array, and the less active cold data will be allocated to slower but high-capacity array. This feature allows you to enjoy high-performance file sharing benefited from SSD, at the same time you can gain the large capacity from the group of disc drives.

M.2 slots* are available on most SMB NAS series. It allows you to install M.2 SSD to greatly enhance your system performance. The installed M.2 SSD can be used for caching(read-only or read & write caching), auto data tiering, or used along with other internal storage media. Caching can be assigned to storage volumes and can significantly improve its performance especially when handling small-sized files. In addition, it can accelerate applications such as database and virtual machine.
*Supports SATA 6Gb/s M.2 SSD, check each model for more details. For PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, please use QM2 adapter.

QM2 is designed specifically to upgrade your entry and mid-end QNAP NAS system! QNAP puts 2 M.2 SSD slots (SATA or PCIe NVMe) and one 10GBase-T network port into a single PCIe expansion card. Installed M.2 SSD sticks are covered by a giant heatsink as well as a smart fan for heat dissipation which ensure operational stability and longevity. With this PCIe expansion card, you can enable SSD Caching or auto tiering while populating all your NAS bays with high capacity HDD!

The Turbo NAS is certified with VMware vSphere NFS and iSCSI protocols, Citrix XenServer, and is compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V environment. This allows the Turbo NAS to be easily deployed as a shared storage in a virtualized testing environment where users need to run different types of operating systems and software applications.
QNAP also supports VMware VAAI and Microsoft ODX to increase the performance by offloading server loading for ESXi and Hyper-V respectively. With the support of QNAP vSphere Client plug-in, web client, and QNAP SMI-S provider, it further enhances the efficiency of operations and management in virtualization applications.

Based on the popular open source project - KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), QNAP's Virtualization Station is a full virtualization solution for all QNAP NAS with x86 hardware* containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). With industry-leading capability and superior performance, we make it possible to run multiple operating systems on the same QNAP NAS, while centrally managing and monitoring all of your virtual machine deployments.
Virtualization Station also offers incredible versatility, from connecting VM's directly through HDMI and use your NAS as a PC, to connecting to built-in network virtual switch, USB Devices, and even external GPU's. Furthermore, built-in data protection features such as Snapshot safeguard VM failures and prevent data loss in virtualized environments.
These unique features are only included in QTS 4, QNAP's NAS OS, which comes free on all QNAP NAS devices. This QNAP software is intuitive with many applications and options for different business needs.
