Outgoing Traffic

The requests raised by the NAS connect to the servers in the internet.

Here are some examples:

  • Download Station app downloads the files from a file server in the internet.
  • Firmware upgrading functions connects to QNAP firmware server to confirm the availability of new version.
  • Remote helpdesk app connects to QNAP helpdesk site for submitting a ticket.

Note: In this case, if the traffic passthrough a firewall device, you can set up outbound firewall rules to control the NAS connections to those servers. See the FAQ : The outbound firewall rule that you must configured.

Question: Do i need port forwarding to update nas firmware and applications?

No, updating firmware or applications means the NAS connecting the server in the internet, this is a outbound traffic. No need to set up port forwarding.

Incoming Traffic

The requests raised by other parties connect to the NAS from the internet.

Here are some examples:

  • Access the Wordpress website on your NAS from the internet.
  • Control the NAS via web interface from the internet.
  • Plex server is hosting on the NAS, streaming the videos over internet.

Note: In this case, you may need to configure port forwarding setting and firewall setting.

  • If the incoming traffic passthrough a firewall device or Qufirewall is installed on the NAS, you can set up the inbound firewall rules in the firewall or configure Firewall profile in Qufirewall to control the connections to your NAS. See the FAQ: How to Use QuFirewall.
