Why is admin still accessing my device after I disabled the admin account?

Release date: 2024-03-15

Applicable Products

QTS, QuTS Hero, QuTScloud, QuLog Center

Overview

The "admin" user may still be online even after the "admin" account is disabled because system processes of certain apps use the "admin" account to perform tasks. The use of the "admin" account by certain apps ensures that internal communication between apps is stable and secure, and it does not put your system at risk. Because the system records all system access from human users and processes, you will always be able to review and monitor who is accessing your device at any time.

Recommendation

To determine if your device is being accessed by an unauthorized "admin" user you can temporarily disable all applications currently using the "admin" account and see if there are any remaining "admin" users online:

  1. Open QuLog Center.
  2. Go to Online Users.
  3. Click on Advanced Search.
  4. For User, specify Includes, and specify the keyword "admin"
  5. Click Search.
  6. For each process, stop the owner application by doing the following:
    1. Identify the application of the process in the Client App column.
      Tip
If the Client App field is empty or "--", then the owner application of the process is unknown.
    2. Go to App Center.
    3. Locate the application.
    4. Click (down arrow) > Stop under the application's icon.
  7. After stopping all applications using the "admin" account, wait 5 to 10 minutes.
  8. Go back to QuLog Center > Online Users.
  9. Check if there are any processes still using the "admin" account. If there no such processes, then you can conclude that there are no unauthorized users currently accessing your device. If there is such a process using the "admin" account, you may need to investigate the owning application. You can also contact QNAP technical support if you suspect an unauthorized user is accessing your device.

Typical applications that use "admin" processes include:

  • AMIZcloud Agent
  • Hyper Data Protector
  • Q'center
  • Security Center
  • Virtualization Station
