How do I replace a hardware component in an HA cluster?

Last modified date: 2025-07-28

Applicable Products

  • QuTS hero h5.3.0 or later
  • High Availability Manager

Scenario

I've set up a high-availability (HA) cluster and need to replace a non-hot-swappable hardware component (for example, a memory module) on one or both of my NAS devices. How can I safely replace the hardware component without interrupting services?

Procedure

Important

Before performing hardware maintenance, we highly recommend backing up your data to prevent data loss.

  1. Log in to the active node as an administrator.
  2. Optional: Perform a switchover.
Perform this step only if you are replacing a hardware component on the active node but not on the passive node.
    1. Go to High Availability Manager > Cluster.
    2. Click Manage, and then click Switch Over.
The active and passive nodes switch roles.
    3. Log in to the new active node as an administrator.
  3. Shut down the current passive node.
    1. On the active node, go to High Availability Manager > Nodes.
    2. Identify the passive node.
    3. Click , and then click Shut Down.
      A confirmation window opens.
    4. Click Shut Down.
    5. Wait for the passive node to fully shut down.
  4. Replace the hardware component on the passive node.
    Tip

For detailed instructions on replacing hardware components, refer to the hardware user guide for your specific NAS model.
You can download hardware user guides from Download Center.

  5. Power on the passive node.
  6. Verify the passive node successfully rejoins the HA cluster.
    1. On the active node, go to High Availability Manager > Cluster.
    2. Ensure the active and passive nodes are connected.
  7. Optional: Replace the hardware component on the other node by repeating steps 2-6.
Skip this step if you only need to replace the hardware component on one node.
  8. Perform a switchover to test HA functionality.
    Tip

Once you’ve finished all hardware maintenance, we recommend performing a switchover to confirm that HA functionality is operating normally.
