Contents:

Introduction

Apple iTunesDigital multimedia has become an integral part of our lives. Almost everyone has these kinds of files saved on their computers and they are constantly seeking better and more convenient ways to enjoy them on the various devices in our digital lifestyles.

This guide will demonstrate how a QNAP Turbo NAS can act as an iTunes music server that will provide your devices with the ability to play the music stored on the Turbo NAS.

Enable iTunes Server on QNAP Turbo NAS

Go to “Control Panel”> “Applications” > “iTunes Service” and enable the iTunes Service. You can also configure the service to require password authentication. Click “Apply” to finish.

Enable iTunes service on QNAP

The iTunes service on the Turbo NAS will, by default, scan all the music files stored in Multimedia folders. Make sure your music is stored in one of these folders in order to listen to them using the iTunes Server.

Locate the service in iTunes

Please have iTunes installed on your computer, and ensure that both your computer and Turbo NAS are located on the same LAN. In iTunes, you should see an entry (normally the name of your Turbo NAS) shown under “Music” in the upper left panel of iTunes interface (in this example: TS-269). Click on the name of the Turbo NAS and it will bring up a list of all the music files stored in your Multimedia folders. You can now listen to these songs at any time.

This function is very useful. By saving your music on your Turbo NAS instead of computers in your home, you can enjoy universal access to your music by streaming them to a range of devices.

Digital Media Players (such as Roku's Sound Bridge) have become increasingly popular, and some of these devices support music playback from iTunes on the same network. You can use these devices to play the music files from the Turbo NAS without needing a computer.

Possible usage with iTunes and Roku

Conclusion

With the iTunes Server provided by Turbo NAS, you can centralize your music collection and share them via LAN to computers that have iTunes or to compatible media players. The energy-saving design of the Turbo NAS makes it a far superior choice than running a computer just to play music.
