How do I update JBOD enclosure firmware in an HA cluster?

Last modified date: 2025-07-11

Applicable Products

  • QuTS hero h5.3.0 or later
  • High Availability Manager 1.1 or later
  • Storage Manager

Overview

To ensure system stability, QNAP high-availability (HA) clusters do not support updating JBOD enclosure firmware. If you need to update the firmware of JBOD enclosures intended for use in an HA cluster, we recommend performing the firmware update before creating the HA cluster.

Note
If you already created the cluster, you must remove the cluster first, update the firmware of your JBOD enclosures, and then recreate the cluster.

Instructions

  1. Confirm that your NAS devices are not part of an HA cluster.
    Note
You cannot update JBOD enclosure firmware while your NAS devices are part of an HA cluster.
  2. Connect your JBOD enclosure to a NAS.
  3. Check if a firmware update is available for the JBOD enclosure.
    1. Log in to the NAS as an administrator.
    2. Go to Storage Manager > Disks > Devices.
    3. Select the JBOD enclosure.
    4. Click Action, and then select Check for Update.
  4. If an update is available, or if you need to upload a firmware file manually, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  5. After the update is complete, restart the NAS.
  6. After the restart, check that the JBOD enclosure firmware is updated.
    1. Go to Storage Manager > Disks > Devices.
    2. Select the JBOD enclosure.
    3. Click Action, and then select Check for Update.

Once you have updated the firmware for all of your JBOD enclosures, you can create the HA cluster. Make sure to connect the same models and number of JBOD enclosures to the same ports on both NAS devices.
