How do I improve slow file transfer speeds between Mac OS 10.11.5 (and newer) and my NAS via SMB protocol?

Applied Models:

Answer:

Mac OS 10.11.5 (and newer) enables SMB signing by default. Although this setting enhances file transfer security, it requires more time and system resources. To disable SMB signing, follow these steps:

  1. Launch "Terminal" on your Mac.
  2. Enter this command:
    sudo touch /etc/nsmb.conf
  3. Enter your Mac password.
  4. Enter these two commands:
    sudo bash-c 'echo "[default]" >> /etc/nsmb.conf'
    sudo bash-c 'echo "signing_required=no" >> /etc/nsmb.conf'

To re-enable SMB signing, follow these steps:

  1. Launch "Terminal" on your Mac.
  2. Enter this command:
    sudo rm /etc/nsmb.conf

Please note: Although disabling SMB signing enhances file transfer performance, this setting can decrease its security.
