Summary

Starting from QTS 5.2.4 and QuTS hero h5.2.4, the DHCP server configuration in Network & Virtual Switch has been enhanced to provide more flexibility and control. Key updates include:

  • Support for configuring network adapters with DHCP-assigned IP addresses as DHCP servers, enabling more dynamic and adaptable IP management.
  • Ability to reserve and unreserve IP addresses for client devices, with the option to assign reserved IP addresses during DHCP server setup.
  • Simplified DHCP server configuration steps, making the DHCP server configuration and management more straightforward and user-friendly.

Create a DHCP server

  1. Log in to your NAS as a NAS administrator or a user with the "System management" delegated role.
    Note
For details on delegated roles, see "Privilege Settings > Delegated administration" in the QTS User Guide or the QuTS hero User Guide.
  2. Open Network & Virtual Switch.
    The Overview page appears.
  3. Click Advanced in the side-panel menu.
  4. Go to Network > DHCP Server.
  5. Click DHCP Server.
  6. Click Add.
The Add DHCP Server window appears.
  7. Select an interface.
    Important
You can now create a DHCP server even when the adapter is assigned a DHCP IP address. However, it is strongly recommended to use a static IP address to ensure consistent network behavior.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Configure the basic DHCP server settings.
    1. Optional: Click  next to the IP address to change the existing IP address.
The Edit IP Settings window appears.
    2. Specify a fixed IPv4 address.
    3. Select the subnet mask from the drop-down menu.
    4. Specify the default gateway IP address.
    5. Select the jumbo frame to improve network performance when transferring large amounts of data.
    6. Select the appropriate network speed to match your network infrastructure.
    7. Optional: Specify the primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses.
    8. Click Apply.
The Edit IP Settings window closes.
  10. Specify the starting IP address.
  11. Specify the ending IP address.
  12. Select the subnet mask from the drop-down menu.
  13. Set the lease time for leased IP addresses.
  14. Select a default gateway.
    • Interface IP address: Select to set the default gateway IP address to match the interface IP address configured as the DHCP server.
    • Manual IP: Select to manually enter the default gateway IP address for the DHCP server.
  15. Optional: Specify the primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses.
  16. Optional: Configure the advanced DHCP server settings.
    1. Click Advanced Settings.
Network & Virtual Switch displays the advanced DHCP server settings.
    2. WINS server: Enter the IP address of the WINS server to support NetBIOS name resolution.
    3. Domain name: Specify the domain name to assign to DHCP clients.
    4. TFTP server: Enter the IP address of the TFTP server for clients to download boot files or configuration files.
    5. Boot file: Specify the boot file name that DHCP clients will download from the TFTP server during network boot.
  17. Optional: Add clients and reserve IP addresses.
    1. Click Clients and Reserved IPs.
    2. Click Add.
The Add Reserved IP window appears.
    3. Enter the device name.
    4. Specify the IP address to reserve the IP address for the device.
    5. Specify the MAC address of the device.
    6. Click Apply.
      The IP reservation window closes.
      Note
To unreserve one or more IP addresses, go to the DHCP Server page and click Add or under Actions for an existing DHCP server. Click Clients and Reserved IPs, select the IP addresses you want to unreserve, click Unreserve, and then click Apply.
  18. Click Apply.

Network & Virtual Switch creates the DHCP server.

Note
  • When editing DHCP server settings, the interface IP address cannot be modified.
  • The Enable DHCP Server option can be configured during the edit process but is not available when creating a new DHCP server.
  • You can assign the current DHCP IP address of a client device as a reserved IP address to ensure it always receives the same address from the DHCP server.
