Learn at once to use Transmission to download

Introduction

Transmission is an open source and fast BT downloading software with a concise user interface. Due to the stable performance and support for multiple platforms, it has earned much praise from users. Now through the APP Center of the QNAP NAS, you can also install this software on the NAS to enjoy its convenient features.

  • Install Transmission
  • Use Transmission for the first time
  • Modify the username or password of Transmission
  • Add new BT task(s)
  • Advanced Applications

1. Install Transmission

To install Transmission, enter the NAS administration interface first, and go to “Applications” > “APP Center”.

2. Use Transmission for the first time

(1) After the installation is complete, you can see the Transmission ICON under the “INSTALLED” tab. Click one of the following URLs to start using this software.

(2) Only the admin account of the NAS can be used to login the Transmission. Each time when entering Transmission, the user will be asked to enter the username and password, which are admin/admin by default. If you don’t want to use “admin” as your password, you can modify it at the Access Right Management of the NAS.

(3)Enter the main screen of Transmission, click “Transmission: Enabled” and the BT administration interface of Transmission will show up. Each time when you enter the BT administration interface, Transmission will ask for the username and password, which are admin/admin by default. (Note! These are not the same as the NAS username and password.)

3. Modify the username or password of Transmission

If you do not want to keep both the default username and password, you can refer to the following method to modify them.

(1)Enter the main screen of Transmission, and click “Configuration Editor” to modify the parameters.

(2)In the editor, you can find two lines of fields: “rpc-password” and “rpc-username”. “rpc-password” is the user password and “rpc-username” is the username. Enter the new username and password between the double quotes (” “) for each value field respectively, save and restart, and the modification is finished.

4. Add new BT task(s)

Before doing BT download(s), you need to add new BT task(s). The following example is based on the BT downloading point provided by the ubuntu website.

(1)Go to “Download” > “Ubuntu Desktop”, scroll down to the bottom, and click “Take a look at full list of our previous versions and alternative downloads” at the “Alternative Options” section.

(2)Right click on one of the downloading links at the BitTorrent section (for example, we use the first link) and select “Save As” to save the Torrent file.

(3)Use the BT administration interface of Transmission to upload the saved file to complete adding the download task.

Tips:

The port number used by the Transmission webpage is 9091. So to remind the remotely connecting users, remember to go to the management interface of the router to open the port 9091 in order to access Transmission.

5. Advanced Applications

(1) Connect and manage Transmission remotely by a mobile phone

The majority of NAS users will take advantage of the power saving and remotely operable features to use the NAS as a BT downloading machine. And during a BT downloading process, the user must perform a seed uploading action to assign the download task to the NAS. However, the user cannot have access to the computer by his or her side at any time. Thus, we can use the smartphones and APP brought with us every day to assist in coping with the BT downloading and managing actions.

A. Go to the administration interface of Transmission to download and install the Tansdroid APP.

(Use the QRCode software or go to Google to look for the apk file)

B. Configure the Tansdroid connection

(2) Connect and manage Transmission remotely by a PC

For the first time of running the program, the following window will pop up to ask the user to enter the remote NAS IP, username and password.
