TS-X53B/TS-X53BU Cannot Detect HDD

Affected NAS models: TS-253B, TS-453B, TS-653B, TS-453BU, TS-853BU and TS-1253BU

If you are using one of the new HGST SATA hard disks which support power disable feature, you may encounter a problem where the NAS is unable to detect the disk at slot 2 of TS-X53BU or the disk at the last slot of TS-X53B.  Please follow below procedure to update the BIOS of these models to resolve the issue.

    Notes:

  • There are two MB versions, 1.3 and 1.5 for TS-253B/TS-453B/TS-653B. (Refer to the table at the bottom of this page)
  • You can ignore this check if you are using TS-453BU/TS-853BU/TS-1253BU.
  • How to check MB version to download corresponding BIOS file to update. Please run below command in NAS console to check MB version.

Ex: For below TS-253B, we get:

[~] # hal_app --vpd_get_field obj_index=0:4
field<0:4> = 70-0QY470150

The last 3 digits 150 indicates the motherboard version is 1.5 and the last 3 digits 130 indicates the motherboard version is 1.3.

  2. Update BIOS

  • Extract the downloaded file and upload these 2 files to shared folder, “Public”: flashrom and XXXXXXXX.bin (<< BIOS file)
  • Run below commands to perform the BIOS update

[~] # cd /share/Public
[/share/Public] # chmod +x flashrom
[/share/Public] #./flashrom --programmer internal --write xxxxxxxx.bin -s

flashrom v0.9.9-unknown on Linux 4.2.8 (x86_64)
flashrom is free software, get the source code at https://flashrom.org
