How do I set up Time Machine backups between my Mac and NAS on a domain via the SMB protocol?

To use Time Machine with a Mac and NAS on a domain, follow the steps below:

  1. Enable Time Machine Support on the NAS by going to “Main Menu” > “Hybrid Backup Sync” > “Backup Server” > “Time Machine”. If you have not installed Hybrid Backup Sync, you can install it in the App Center.
  2. Go to “Control Panel” > “Network & File Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” > “Microsoft Networking” > “Advanced Options” > “Highest SMB version” and select “SMB 3.0”.
  3. Map shared folder.
    Method A:
    1. Launch “Finder” on your Mac.
    2. Go to “Share” and select the shared folder that will be used to store your Time Machine backups.
    3. Enter your domain account and password.
    Method B:
    1. Launch “Finder” on your Mac.
    2. Click “Go” on the menu bar and select “Connect to Server”.
    3. Enter “smb://<NAS name.local or IP address>/smb”.
    4. Enter your domain account and password.
  4. Launch “Time Machine” on your Mac and select “Options”.
  5. Click “+” and select the shared folder in “Share”.

Note: SMB 3.0 is only available for QTS 4.3.0 or newer versions.
