Why do different applications display a different total number of files and folders?
Applicable Products
- Shared Folder (QTS)
- File Station
- Windows File Explorer
Concept
Different applications follow different rules for displaying file and folder information.
These rules are based on the network protocol that the application uses to manage files and folders. In this case, QTS shared folders, File Station, and Windows File Explorer each use a different network protocol for file and folder management, and this is why you see different file and folder counts for the same shared folder.
For example, the network protocol used by shared folders in QTS includes thumbnail files in the total number of displayed files. However, the network protocol used by File Station does not recognize thumbnail files as “savable”, so it doesn’t display those files. Similarly, the network protocol that Microsoft Windows uses, Samba, displays only Samba-savable files and folders.
