Why applied SSL certificate from Let's Encrypt failed with warning of'maximum number'?

Last modified date: 2025-08-18

Applicable Products

All QNAP NAS Series

Scenario

This error occurs because Let's Encrypt has rate limits for issuing certificates. Specifically, Let's Encrypt allows a maximum of 5 certificates per domain name (per exact set of identifiers) within a rolling 7-day window. If your QNAP NAS has already requested 5 certificates for the same domain (e.g., yourdevice.myqnapcloud.com) in the past 7 days, any further request will be blocked with the warning message you received.

Solution

  1. Change the myQNAPcloud Device Name, which effectively creates a new domain name (e.g., newname.myqnapcloud.com) and resets the limit for that name.
  2. Alternatively, wait for the 7-day window to expire before requesting another certificate for the original domain.
