HDP for SaaS license is based on seats while storage depends on NAS capacity

Last modified date: 2026-01-30

Applicable products

  • HDP for SaaS
  • NAS running with QTS or QuTS hero system

Overview

QNAP licenses are used to enable access to advanced features or premium software products. QNAP offers different license types and plans, and some basic licenses are provided free of charge, while premium licenses can be purchased to enhance product functionality. QNAP also provides multiple management portals, flexible subscription plans, and various activation options to meet different needs.

HDP for SaaS uses a seat-based licensing model. A seat represents one user account that you can protect, such as a Microsoft 365 user. The license does not define a fixed storage quota per user. Instead, backup data is stored on your QNAP NAS, and the available NAS capacity determines how much data you can retain.

Solution

  • The HDP for SaaS license is intended to cover seats (the number of user accounts you are allowed to protect), not a fixed storage allocation per user.
  • Backup data is stored on your QNAP NAS, so the practical storage limit is determined by the available free capacity on your NAS.

Recommendation

To correctly interpret that the HDP for SaaS license is for seats and not for a documented storage limit, follow these recommendations:

  1. Confirm your HDP for SaaS seat count:
    • Use the QNAP licensing portal or the License Center on your NAS to verify how many HDP for SaaS seats you have purchased and activated.
    • Ensure that the number of protected Microsoft 365 users does not exceed the licensed seat count.
  2. Monitor NAS storage capacity:
    • On QTS or QuTS hero, open Storage & Snapshots and review storage pools, volumes, and free space.
    • Plan for additional disks or storage expansion if your backup data grows and available capacity becomes low.
