Why can't I use NVMe PCIe/M.2 SSDs for storage?
Applicable Products:
There are two common reasons why NVMe PCIe/M.2 SSDs can't be used as storage:
- You are using third-party adapter cards.
- The NVMe PCIe/M.2 SSDs are not in the SSD compatibility list.

PCIe form-factor SSDs and PCIe M.2 SSDs installed in third-party adapter cards cannot be used to create storage pools and static volumes. This is due to QNAP identifying a number of compatibility issues with various brands of NVMe SSDs. As QNAP cannot guarantee compatibility with third-party cards, the only adapter card that is recommended for use in QNAP NAS is QNAP’s QM2 card.
Refer to the following table for how different SSDs can be used in a QNAP NAS:
SSD Type | Installation Method | SSD Cache | Storage Space |
---|---|---|---|
PCIe/NVMe M.2 | QM2 card | Yes | Yes |
PCIe/NVMe M.2 | NAS internal M.2 slot | Yes | Yes |
PCIe/NVMe M.2 | 3rd-party M.2 to PCIe adapter card | Yes | No |
PCIe form-factor SSD | PCIe slot | Yes | No |
SATA 2.5” SSD | NAS drive bay | Yes | Yes |
SATA M.2 SSD | QM2 card | Yes | Yes |
SATA M.2 SSD | NAS internal M.2 slot | Yes | Yes |

Consult the compatibility list to check if the SSD is compatible with your NAS
Note: If SSD Qtier is already configured, newly inserted SSD can't join the Qtier directly.
