NCQ disabled. Timeout error.

Symptom

User will find below system event log:

  • [Host] :”Disk {x}”: NCQ disabled. Timeout error.

What does NCQ mean?

Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a technology used to improve performance and stability of disk. This feature is applied on SATA disk and SATA SSD in our OS.
NCQ command used for optimization arranges sequence I/O when the application transfers multiple commands at the same time. This mechanism reduces disk mechanical loss and improves the disk performance and life cycle.

When does the error happen?

Disk report NCQ command fail to OS, the OS identifies the error is timeout error related.

Diagnose

Replace the disk to another slot for checking the log still appears. If the log appears continuously by disk, please follow the instructions in the next section.

Resolution

We recommend replacing the disk with your distributor if the disk is still under warranty. If not, that means the disk firmware might encounter some unknown issue please check the disk status with the distributor or replace another disk for storing the data continuously.
If you want to avoid the disk drop issue caused by the NCQ command failed in advance, please disable the NCQ in disk settings. (Storage & Snapshot > Disk & VJBOD > Disk Health > Choose disk > Advanced > Disable Native Command Queuing (NCQ))

Notice:

Disable NCQ in settings is a way to resolve the disk dropped situation but there’re many reasons that might cause the disk drop.
