Why did my iSER-enabled VJBOD connection fail after updating QuTS hero to h6.0.0 or later?

Last modified date: 2025-11-27

Applicable Products

  • QuTS hero
  • Storage Manager

Scenario

I have an iSER (iSCSI Extensions for RDMA)-enabled VJBOD connection between two NAS devices. I am using a Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro network adapter to support the iSER connection, and the NAS devices are running QuTS hero h5.2.x (or earlier). However, after I update both NAS devices to QuTS hero h6.0.0 (or later), my VJBOD disk disconnects and enters an error state. The system does not display any specific warnings or error messages that explain the connection failure.

Root Cause

In QuTS hero h6.0.0, QNAP has updated the driver for Mellanox network adapters, and the new driver version no longer supports RDMA functionality for the older Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro chipset.

Solution

You can reconnect your VJBOD disk using one of the following methods:

  • Select a different network adapter for the VJBOD connection.
  • Replace the Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro network adapter with a newer model (such as the Mellanox ConnectX-6).
  • Disable iSER for the VJBOD connection by following these steps:
    1. Go to Storage Manager > Disks > Device.
    2. Select the VJBOD disk.
    3. Click Action, and then select Edit Target.
      The target settings window opens.
    4. Deselect Use iSER when available.
    5. Click Apply.
Important
  • If you rely on iSER support, always check hardware compatibility before performing a major operating system update.
  • Due to incompatible storage structures, we highly discourage downgrading from QuTS hero h6.0.0 (or later) to QuTS hero h5.2.x (or earlier). Doing so may lead to data loss or corruption.
