What is Bad Block Management (BBM)?

Last modified date: 2023-12-07

Applicable Products

QTS 4.2 (or later)

Overview

Bad Block Management (BBM) keeps a log of bad blocks in each disk. This allows the system to track each bad block directly and prevent new data from being written to the bad blocks so that disk performance is not affected.

BBM is particularly useful for RAID groups, as it allows them to retain redundancy of bad blocks on all stripes. With this feature, a RAID group can remain functional even when it is rebuilding.

Note
  • BBM only supports RAID groups of RAID 5 and RAID 6 created in QTS 4.2 or later. RAID groups created in earlier versions of QTS will not be supported even after upgrading the firmware to QTS 4.2 or later.
  • BBM does not support RAID groups of RAID 5 that were originally migrated from RAID 1.
