How to Install and Deploy a QuWAN vRouter KVM Image on Ubuntu

QuWAN vRouter Information

About QuWAN vRouter

QuWAN vRouter is a cloud-delivered SD-WAN solution that can be deployed on third-party Virtual Machine (VM) platforms.

QuWAN vRouter enables seamless interconnection between QNAP's SD-WAN solution and hypervisors. It provides easy configuration, provisioning, and troubleshooting of wide area network (WAN) using simplified deployment techniques.

QuWAN vRouter Requirements

  • A network device with at least two Ethernet ports for the WAN and LAN connection.

  • QuWAN vRouter requires at least 1 GB of memory and a single-core processor to run. QNAP recommends allocating sufficient memory to ensure system stability and performance.

  • QNAP recommends running QuWAN vRouter on Intel Xeon processors or later.

  • Supported hypervisors:

    • VMware ESXi v7.0 or later

    • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) or later

  • A stable internet connection to verify licenses.

Linux KVM Requirements

KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is an open-source virtualization module built into the Linux kernel, which enables users to run several isolated guest virtual machines.

KVM allows you to transform a Linux operating system into a hypervisor with dedicated virtual hardware including CPUs, disks, graphic adapters, memory, and network cards.

Verify CPU and Processor Support

Enter the following command to determine whether your system supports virtualization:

$ egrep -c '(vmx|svm)'/proc/cpuinfo

  • If the output is greater than zero, the system supports virtualization.

  • If the output is less than or equal to zero, you may need to enable virtualization from the system BIOS.

Install Packages

Enter the following commands to install the cpu-checker package.

  • $ sudo apt update

  • $ sudo apt install cpu-checker

  • $ sudo kvm-ok

The terminal displays whether the device supports KVM.

Purchasing QuWAN vRouter

Purchasing a QuWAN vRouter License

To use QuWAN vRouter, you must purchase and activate a QuWAN vRouter license from the QNAP Software Store.

QuWAN vRouter license is a subscription-based license. QNAP Software Store provides various subscription plans. You can choose a subscription period and data transfer rate plan according to your needs.

Before buying a license, ensure that you are signed in to myQNAPcloud.

  1. Go to https://software.qnap.com/.
  2. Sign in with your QNAP ID.
    Note:

    If you do not have a QNAP account, you must first sign up for an account.

  3. In the search box, enter QuWAN vRouter Edition.

    QuWAN vRouter Edition appears in the search results.

  4. Select QuWAN vRouter Edition.
  5. Select a subscription plan.
  6. Specify the number of licenses.
  7. Click ADD TO CART.
  8. Click .
  9. Verify the content in your shopping cart.
  10. Click GO TO CHECKOUT.
  11. Specify your payment information.
  12. Select a payment method.

    2. Specify the billing address.

    3. Agree to QNAP terms and conditions.

    4. Click Buy with Google Pay.

      Google Pay authentication window appears.

    5. Follow Google Pay instructions to complete the payment.

    After the payment, you can view order details in My Orders and manage your subscriptions in My Subscriptions.

  13. Transfer the QuWAN vRouter license subscription from your personal QNAP ID to your QuWAN organization.
    1. Click Activate License.

      The QNAP License Manager page opens.

    2. Log in with your QNAP ID.

      QNAP License Manager displays the list of purchased licenses.

    3. Identify the QuWAN vRouter license subscription.
    4. Under Advanced Options, click .

      The Transfer License window appears.

    5. Click Next.
    6. Select your QuWAN organization.
      Important:

      Once you transfer the license to an organization, you cannot transfer it back to your QNAP ID or a different organization.

      Tip:

      To create a new organization, go to http://www.account.qnap.com, click Organization and then click Create Organization.

    7. Click Transfer.

      QNAP License Manager transfers the license to your QuWAN organization.

    8. Click OK.

      The Transfer License window closes.

    Tip:

    To upgrade a subscription, go to [Account_Name] > My Orders > Upgrade Plans.

    To check the status of purchased licenses on QuWAN Orchestrator, go to http://www.quwan.qnap.com and then click License Subscriptions.

Creating a QuWAN Device

Creating a QuWAN Device on QuWAN Orchestrator

After purchasing a QuWAN vRouter license, you must create a QuWAN device and then create a join key.

Note:

QuWAN Orchestrator administrators are required to provide a valid join key while configuring QuWAN vRouter.

  1. Go to https://quwan.qnap.com.
  2. Log in to QuWAN Orchestrator.

    The Overview page appears.

  3. Go to QuWAN Device.
  4. Click Create New QuWAN Device.

    The Create New QuWAN Device window appears.

  5. Specify the following information.

    Select a region from the drop-down list.

    Tip:

    To add a new region, go to QuWAN Topology > Topology Settings and then click Add Region.

    Site

    Select a site from the drop-down list.

    Note:

    To add a new site, go to https://account.qnap.com.

    Go to Organization > Site and then click Create Site.

    QuWAN device name

    Specify a name for your QuWAN device.

    Device model

    Select QuWAN vRouter Edition if you are installing QuWAN on a third-party hypervisor.

    License

    Select a license type from the list of purchased licenses.

    Note:

    The selected license is linked to the QuWAN device.

  6. Click Create.

    QuWAN Orchestrator creates the QuWAN device and the QuWAN Device Settings page appears.

  7. Specify the contact information.

  8. Configure the network settings.
    1. Configure port 1 settings.
    2. Click .

      The Port 1 Configuration window opens.

    3. Configure the WAN IP settings.

      Setting

      Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP

      Select this option to automatically obtain an IP address.

      If the network supports DHCP, the device port automatically obtains the IP address and network settings.

      Static IP address

      Select this option to manually specify an IP address.

      When assigning a static IP address, specify the following information:

      • Fixed IP address

      • Subnet mask

      • Default gateway

      PPPoE

      Select this option to specify a username and password for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE).

    4. Configure the remaining settings.

      Specify the gross bit rate of the physical layer in terms of transmitting and receiving data rate.

      Description

      Enter the WAN port description.

    5. Click Save.

      QuWAN Orchestrator updates the WAN settings.

    6. Configure the port 8 settings.
    7. Click .

      The Port 8 Configuration window opens.

    8. Configure the LAN IP settings.

      Setting

      Select the LAN segment type from the drop-down list.

      Fixed IP address

      Specify a fixed IP address.

      Subnet Mask

      Specify the subnet mask used to subdivide your IP address.

    9. Optional: Enable DHCP service.
    10. Specify the DHCP service type.
    11. Configure the DHCP settings.

      Setting

      Specify the starting IP address in a range allocated to DHCP clients.

      End IP

      Specify the ending IP addresses in a range allocated to DHCP clients.

      Lease time

      Specify the length of time that an IP address is reserved for a DHCP client. The IP address is made available to other clients when the lease expires.

      DNS servers

      Specify a DNS server for the DHCP server.

      Tip:

      Specify up to 3 DNS servers and separate them using commas (,).

      Description

      Enter the LAN port description.

    12. Click Save.
    13. Optional: Select a DNS server.
    14. Specify the Network Time Protocol (NTP) server.
      Note:

      The default NTP server is pool.ntp.org.

    15. Enable Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
  9. Click Apply.

QuWAN Orchestrator updates the device information.

Sending a Join Key to the QuWAN Device Administrator

After creating a QuWAN device, you must send the join key to the device administrator.

  1. Go to https://quwan.qnap.com.
  2. Log in to QuWAN Orchestrator.

    The Overview page appears.

  3. Go to QuWAN Device.
  4. Select the region and QuWAN device.
  5. Select QuWAN Device Settings.
  6. Click Send Join Key.

    A confirmation message appears.

  7. Verify if you have received the join key email.
    Note:

    For details on downloading the QuWAN vRouter image, see the Deployment section of the tutorial.

QuWAN vRouter Deployment

To deploy QuWAN vRouter, you must create a virtual machine using the QuWAN vRouter shell script and XML files in KVM.

After you deploy the virtual machine, configure the VM settings and assign network adapters to the virtual SD-WAN image.

Installing KVM on Ubuntu

After sending the join key to the QuWAN device administrator and downloading the image, you must install KVM and its relevant packages.

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Enter $ sudo apt update to download packages from all configured sources.
  3. Optional: Enter $ sudo apt upgrade -y to install all available upgrades of installed packages.
  4. Install KVM packages on the system.

    Version

    Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)

  5. Confirm the installation when prompted.

The system installs KVM and its packages.

Enabling libvirtd Service

Linux uses the libvirtd daemon component to perform management tasks for virtualized guests. By default, the libvirtd service is automatically enabled after installing KVM.

To enable the service, perform the following steps:

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run the following commands:
    • $ sudo service libvirtd start

    • $ sudo update-rc.d libvirtd enable

    The system enables and activates the libvirtd service.

  3. Enter $ service libvirtd status.

    The terminal displays the status of the libvirtd service.

Deploying QuWAN vRouter on Linux KVM

Before creating and deploying the virtual machine, ensure that you download the QuWAN vRouter image.

Important:

QuWAN vRouter requires Ubuntu 18.04 or later.

  1. Download the QuWAN vRouter image.
    1. Go to https://www.qnap.com/download.
    2. Select QuWAN vRouter Edition as the product type and model.
    3. Identify the KVM QuWAN vRouter image.
    4. Under Download Link, click .

      The device downloads the VM image.

    5. Extract the qcow2 and script file from the zipped file.
  2. Open a terminal.
  3. Enter the following commands to execute the script file:
    • $ chmod +x startup_kvm_2021XXXX-2.1.2.00XX.sh

    • $ sudo ./startup_kvm_2021XXXX-2.1.2.00XX.sh

    Important:

    Make sure to replace X's with the corresponding filenames of the downloaded KVM files.

  4. Enter the following command to install the network-manager package:

    $ sudo apt-get install network-manager

The script creates eight network interfaces, XML files, and QuWAN vRouter on KVM. After completing this process, the terminal displays the following message:Domain QuWAN_20210803-2.1.2.0005 defined from VM_20210803-2.1.2.0005.xml

Configuring QuWAN vRouter Settings on Linux KVM

After installing the QuWAN vRouter virtual machine on KVM, you must configure the VM settings and assign port groups to the network adapters.

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. To view the virtual bridges, enter the following command:

    $ brctl show

    KVM displays the virtual bridges.

  3. Specify a text name for the interface by entering the following commands:
    • $ nmcli con add type bridge-slave ifname <interface name> master <bridge name>

    • $ nmcli con up brige-slave-<interface name>

    In the following example, we assign the physical network interfaces for WAN and LAN connections.

    Assign physical interface enp1s0f0 to QuWAN vRouter interface Quwan_1 for the WAN connection:

    • $ nmcli con add type bridge-slave ifname enp1s0f0 master Quwan_1

    • $ nmcli con up brige-slave-enp1s0f0

    Assign physical interface enp7s0 to QuWAN vRouter interface Quwan_8 for the LAN connection:

    • $ nmcli con add type bridge-slave ifname enp7s0 master Quwan_8

    • $ nmcli con up brige-slave-enp7s0

    Note:

    The interface name (ifname) value should be as assigned by the local device and should be suitable for use in commands. Enter ifconfig in the terminal to check the interface name value.

    The terminal associates the physical interface with the QuWAN vRouter interface.

  4. Open the KVM console.
  5. Verify the bridge connection.
  6. Open a terminal.
  7. Enter the following command:

    $ nm-connection-editor

    The Network Connections window appears.

  8. Verify if the bridge-slave is connected to a vnet.
    1. Double-click an interface.
    2. Select Bridge.
    3. Check if the bridged connection has been established.
    4. Click Save.
  9. Verify if the interface is able to automatically connect to the VM.
    1. Open a terminal.
    2. Enter either of the following commands to view the connection settings.
      • $ brctl show

      • $ nmcli connection show

      KVM displays the connection settings.

    3. Adjust the bridge priority to the interface.
    4. Click Save.

Initializing QuWAN vRouter

Initializing QuWAN vRouter Using the Join Key

After deploying and configuring QuWAN vRouter on a Linux KVM, you must initialize QuWAN vRouter.

  1. Open a web browser on your computer.
  2. Enter local.quwan.

    The Welcome to QuWAN page appears.

  3. Click Start.

    The Password Settings page appears.

  4. Specify a username and password for the QuWAN vRouter account.
  5. Click Save.

    The QuWAN Port 1 Settings page appears.

  6. Configure the WAN IP settings.

    Setting

    Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP

    Select this option to automatically obtain an IP address.

    If the network supports DHCP, the device port automatically obtains the IP address and network settings.

    Static IP address

    Select this option to manually specify an IP address.

    When assigning a static IP address, specify the following information:

    • Fixed IP address

    • Subnet mask

    • Default gateway

    PPPoE

    Select this option to specify a username and password for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE).

  7. Click Next.

    The Enter Join Key page appears.

  8. Enter the join key.
  9. Select the domain type.
  10. Click Submit.

The device initializes the QuWAN vRouter deployment and displays the information screen after deployment is finished.

QuWAN vRouter is now ready for use. Go to https://quwan.qnap.com to access QuWAN Orchestrator. You can configure and manage multiple QuWAN devices within a single organization.
