Can I replace a failed fan on a QM2 expansion card?

Last modified date: 2026-03-16

Applicable products

  • QNAP QM2 expansion cards (QM2-2P-344A, QM2-2P-384A, QM2-2P-244A, QM2-2S-220A, QM2-4P-384, QM2-2P2G2T, QM2-2P10G1TB, QMS-4S-240 [EOL])

Scenario

  • You have a QM2 expansion card with a failed or noisy fan.
  • You want to replace the fan yourself instead of sending the card for RMA service.
  • You need to know whether self-replacement is allowed and how to confirm fan compatibility.

Explanation

  1. Specification mismatch risk: Fan size, voltage, connector pinout, and fan control behavior may differ. This can cause the fan not to spin, unstable RPM, or abnormal noise.
  2. Insufficient cooling risk: Even if temperatures look normal in the short term, long-duration workloads may still cause overheating, thermal throttling, or reduced SSD lifespan.
  3. Warranty and service impact: Self-replacement may affect warranty decisions. Always confirm the policy with QNAP Support or your reseller before you proceed.

Solution

  • You can replace the fan yourself at your own risk, but you must carefully consider fan compatibility and possible warranty impact.
  • If the product is still under warranty, or if you are unsure about compatibility, contact QNAP Support or your reseller for RMA options first.
  • If you decide to proceed with self-replacement, back up your data, replace the fan carefully, and then monitor NVMe temperatures and fan behavior.

Procedure

  1. Confirm warranty and service options
If your QM2 card is still under warranty, we recommend that you prioritize official support or RMA service. If the card is out of warranty and you accept the risks, you can evaluate self-replacement.
  2. Prepare backup and maintenance window
Before you work on the hardware:
    • Back up important data from volumes or storage pools that use the QM2 card.
    • Schedule a maintenance window to shut down the NAS.
    • Power off the NAS and unplug the power cord before removing the QM2 card.
  3. Verify fan compatibility
Before installing a replacement fan, confirm that it matches:
    • Size: 60 mm × 60 mm, height 8 mm
    • Rated voltage: 12 V DC
    • RPM range: 0–5,600 RPM (±10%)
    • Connector and pin assignment: 4-pin (see connector image below)
    • Note: Specifications may vary slightly between QM2 models and hardware revisions. Always compare with the original fan installed on your card.

  4. Replace the fan
Carefully remove the original fan from the QM2 card and install the new fan using the same mounting points and connector. Make sure the fan cable is firmly connected and does not interfere with other components.
  5. Post-replacement validation
    After reassembling the NAS:
    • Power on the NAS and confirm that the fan spins and there is no abnormal noise.
    • Check NVMe SSD temperatures and system health status in QTS or QuTS hero.
    • Monitor for any warning or error events related to temperature or fan behavior.
  6. Ongoing monitoring
Monitor the system for at least 24–72 hours under a realistic workload. If you notice abnormal temperatures, throttling, or instability, shut down the NAS and recheck the fan installation and compatibility.

Not recommended

  • Do not power on the NAS before confirming the fan connector pinout and polarity.
  • Do not assume compatibility based only on similar fan appearance or size.
  • Do not perform any hardware replacement without a recent data backup.

Note: QNAP may update this FAQ over time to include additional verified models and fan specifications.
