Why can’t I use Windows 7 File Recovery or Windows Server Backup to back up the Windows OS to the Turbo NAS?

Applied Models:

Answer:

If an error message “Incorrect function” is shown when you try to back up the Windows OS to the Turbo NAS by “Windows 7 File Recovery” on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 or by “Windows Server Backup” on Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 (R2), please follow the steps below to change the SMB version.

Turbo NAS version: QTS 4.0.5

  1. Login the Turbo NAS and go to “Control Panel” > “Network Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” > “Microsoft Networking” > “Advanced Options”.
  2. Disable the option “Enable SMB 2”.
  3. Click “Apply”.

Turbo NAS version: QTS 4.1 or above

  1. Login the Turbo NAS and go to “Control Panel” > “Network Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” > “Microsoft Networking” > “Advanced Options”.
  2. Select “SMB 2.0” from the Highest SMB version drop-down menu.
  3. Click “Apply”.

If the error message is “The specified backup disk cannot be found”, this is an SMB issue.  Please try the following solution.

  1. Use a compatible third-party backup tool.  For more information, please visit www.qnap.com/i/au/product_x_grade/cat_intro.php?g_cat=7&hf=0.
  2. Create or attach a vhd(x) file as a local drive (diskmgmt.msc).  Then use “Windows 7 File Recovery” or “Windows Server Backup” to specify this local drive as destination type.
