How do I replace all hard disks in my QNAP NAS with new SSDs?

Last modified date: 2025-11-17

Applicable Products

  • All QNAP NAS models

Overview

QNAP supports replacing hard disks one at a time using the same disk type. However, replacing all hard disks with drives of a different type (for example, changing from HDDs to SSDs) requires a different procedure. Mixing disk types or swapping all drives at once without proper steps may result in system instability or data loss. To migrate from HDDs to SSDs, you need to back up your data, replace all disks at once, and then initialize the NAS.

Note: Initializing your NAS will completely erase all data and previous settings. Be sure to back up your important data before continuing.

Procedure

  1. Back up your data
Use Hybrid Backup Sync or another reliable backup method to ensure your data is safely stored on a separate device or location.
  2. Power off the NAS
  3. Replace all hard disks with SSDs
    • Remove all hard disks from the drive bays.
    • Install the new SSDs in the same bays.
    • Consult the QNAP compatibility list to ensure your SSD models are supported.
  4. Power on the NAS and initialize
The NAS will detect the new drives and prompt you to initialize the system. Follow the on-screen instructions to:
    • Set up storage pools and volumes.
    • Restore your data from the backup made earlier.
