Why didn't deleting a shared folder free up storage space in QTS?

QTS

Root Cause

In QTS, if you delete a shared folder, by default the system only removes the shared folder path. Data in the shared folder is retained unless the user chooses to also delete the data during deletion confirmation. This is designed to prevent accidental deletion of critical files.

If you choose not to delete the data when deleting a shared folder, you will find that files from the deleted shared folder still exist on the NAS when you use snapshot services or access the NAS via the command line interface.

Solution

If you have already deleted a shared folder without deleting its data and wish to remove the data that was contained under that path, you will need to recreate the shared folder first.

If you are deleting a shared folder for the first time, you can skip step 4.

  1. Log on to QTS as an administrator.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Go to Privilege > Shared Folders > Shared Folder.
  4. Recreate the previously deleted shared folder.
    Note
Skip to step 5 if you are deleting a shared folder for the first time.
    1. Click Create > Shared Folder.
The Create a Shared Folder window opens.
    2. Specify the folder name.
    3. Next to Path, select Enter path manually.
    4. Select the path of the shared folder you had previously deleted.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click Next.
    7. Click Finish.
QTS recreates the previously deleted shared folder.
  5. Fully delete the shared folder including all data.
    1. In Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders > Shared Folder, select the shared folder you want to fully delete.
    2. Click Remove.
      A confirmation message appears.
    3. Select Also delete the data.
    4. Click Yes.
The shared folder and its contents are deleted from the NAS.
