Why do Windows and QTS display a login failure error regardless of whether I access a NAS shared folder via SMB or not?
Applicable Products
QTS 5.1.7 or later
QuTS hero 5.1.7 or later
Solution
By default, Windows uses your Windows account credentials when first accessing an SMB server. Since your Windows account credentials may differ from your NAS account, the NAS rejects the connection and logs an error in QuLog Center. After a failed attempt, Windows displays a login prompt where you can enter your NAS credentials. Sometimes, even if you are not trying to access a shared folder, error messages may still appear when some background applications attempt to access NAS shared folders, such as printers, antivirus software, etc. This is an expected behavior from Windows.
To improve user experience, we have adjusted the way QuLog Center displays SMB access log. Starting from QTS 5.1.7 and QuTS hero 5.1.7, when logging in via SMB, any login failures that occur within a three-second interval are counted as a single login failure if they are from the same user, the same source IP address, and the same computer name.
