Why 'Remove' grey out of the docker container?

Last modified date: 2025-07-04

Applicable Products

Container Station

Root Cause

The 'Remove' button under Actions in Container Station could appear grey out if the container is in a transitional or unresponsive state (e.g., frozen, stuck in stopping, or not properly initialized). When this occurs, the UI prevents removal for safety or consistency.

Workaround

Method 1: Use SSH and Docker CLI

1. SSH to NAS with an admistrator account and get root permission.

2. List all containers (including stopped ones):

docker ps -a

3. Identify the container ID or name of the one you want to delete.

4. Stop the container if it's running or unresponsive:

docker stop <container name or id>

5. Remove the container:

docker rm <container name or id>

If you encounter an error during stop or removal, add -f to force:

docker rm -f <container name or id>

Method 2: Identify UI Restriction Reason

Hover your mouse over the greyed-out "Remove" button in Container Station to see the tooltip. The message usually explains why removal is disabled (e.g., container is still initializing, locked by system, etc.)
