Describe the protective mechanisms of the ES NAS Backup Battery Unit (BBU)
The Backup Battery Unit (BBU) uses lithium batteries, which must be charged and discharged regularly to maintain their performance. To address this characteristic, the ES NAS has a specially-designed BBU Learning feature, which can be scheduled to run every 2-6 weeks (4 weeks by default). During the BBU Learning operation, the system will discharge and fully charge the lithium batteries once. As discharging the lithium batteries too rapidly can shorten their lifespan, the batteries are charged and discharged slowly, and the process takes up to one day. To avoid impacting performance, BBU Learning operations for both sets of controllers will be staggered. This ensures that when one BBU is undergoing Learning, the other BBU can protect the DRAM data on both controllers simultaneously, and ensure that the system can continue to provide high-performance caching.
The BBU LED will be orange while charging (left). The BBU LED will be green when in a normal state (right).
