Time Machine Support

QNAP Turbo NAS supports Time Machine for Mac OS X 10.5 or later for concurrent backup of multiple Mac machines. By enabling this feature on the Turbo NAS, the up-to-date copies of the photos, music, videos, documents, settings and applications on your Mac can be backed up automatically to the NAS. You can also recover the data from the NAS to your Mac anytime.

Note: The function or its content is only applicable to some Turbo NAS models only.

A. The settings on the Turbo NAS:

Step 1: Login your Turbo NAS as an administrator. Go to "Backup" > "Time Machine" and enable the Time Machine support.
Step 2: Enter a password for the Time Machine user ("TimeMachine"). The password is empty by default.
Step 3: Select a disk volume from dropdown menu. The data from the Mac will be saved on the selected disk volume of the NAS.
Step 4: Enter the capacity to allow the Time Machine users to use for backup. The capacity must be smaller than the available space of the selected disk volume.
Step 5: Click "APPLY" to save the settings.
Note that all the Time Machine users share the same network share of the NAS for this function.

B. Start to use Time Machine backup on Mac.

Step 1: Click the Time Machine icon in the dock.

Step 2: Bring up Time Machine on your Mac and click "Select Backup Disk..."

Step 3: Select TMBackup on your NAS and click "Use for Backup".

Step 4: Enter the user name and password to access Turbo NAS.
You"ll need to enter "TimeMachine" as the Registered User and the "Password" you specified in Step A2 on the NAS and click "Connect".
Note that the password is case-sensitive.

Step 5: The Time Machine setting is done.
Upon successful connection, the Time Machine on your Mac is switched "ON". The available space for backup will be shown and the "Next Backup" will start in 120 seconds.

That's it. Your Mac data will be automatically backed up to the NAS by Time Machine. The initial backup may take a longer while to complete depending on the data size.
