How to set up a network printer via QNAP NAS?

A printer server can be used on your home/office network to share one or more USB printers with multiple computers. Instead of connecting each printer to an individual computer, you can simply connect the printers to a QNAP NAS, allowing every computer on your network to send print jobs quickly to these network printers, saving time and money.

The printer server feature on QNAP NAS offers Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), zero-configuration setup via Bonjour, Samba printing protocol, and other features for home/office environments. You can also check and manage the printer queue status via the web-based interface. Additional security options are also provided to restrict access based on IP addresses and domain names.


QNAP NAS supports printer sharing on Windows, Mac, and Linux. To set up a network printer using a QNAP NAS, follow these steps.

Preparation before using

  1. Download the drivers for the printer from the Internet or take them from an installation disc.
  2. Connect the printer to a NAS USB port. If the printer is compatible with the NAS, it will display a message to confirm that the printer is connected. Select it to go to “System Settings”> “External Device” > “USB printer”.

Printer management

Choose the printer to edit/view its settings.

  • Printer Info: Displays the printer's information and status.
  • Printer Log: Displays usernames, source IPs, filenames, and task status. You can pause, resume, or delete jobs which are being printed or in the queue. You can also delete the job record after completion.
  • Clean Up Spool Space: Manually delete the job record.
  • Settings:
    “Stop printer sharing and clear print spool”: Enable to temporarily stop sharing the printer and clean all of the records.
    “Bonjour printer support”: Enable to activate Apple Mac zero-configuration setup via Bonjour.
    “Service name”: Edit the printer's name here.
  • Maximum number of jobs per printer: Edit the number of records per printer.
  • Enter the IP address or domain names which are allowed or denied to use the printer service: Set access rights to allow/deny printing from specific IPs or domain addresses via IPP.

Please note that the print record will be cleared after the NAS is restarted.

Windows setup: Using Samba

  1. Go to “Control Panel” > “Network Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” and tick “Enable file service for Microsoft networking” in “Microsoft Networking”.
  2. Open any Windows folder and enter the Samba path of the NAS.
    For example, \\
  3. You will see the shared folders and connected printers.
  4. Choose the printer you want to connect to, and you will be prompted to install drivers. Click “OK” to choose the printer model and install the driver.
  5. After finishing it will display the printer's management window. Go to “Printer”> “Properties” for more information. You can print a test page here to verify the connection.

Windows setup: Using Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Choose “Devices”.
  3. Press “Add a printer or scanner” and choose “The printer that I want isn’t listed”.
  4. Click “Select a shared printer by name” and enter the printer's IP address. For example:
    • The address uses the following format:
      http://NAS_IP:631/printers/PRINTERNAME, where the NAS_IP can also be a domain name address if you want to print remotely.
    • The port 631 is the default port of Internet Printing Protocol.
  5. You will be prompted to install the printer drivers.
  6. After the driver is installed, the printer's name and driver will be displayed.
  7. You can also set it as your default printer or print a test page.
  8. The new network printer is now available for printing.

Mac OS setup

  1. Enable “Bonjour printer support” in the settings page. You can also change the “Service name”.
  2.  Go to “System Preferences” then choose “Printers & Scanners”.
  3. Press “+”to add a printer.
  4. Bonjour will show all of the printers on the local network. Choose the printer connected to the NAS, verify the model is correct, and choose the printer model in “Use”. Click “Add” to create a connection.
  5. Other options may need to be configured for certain printers. Click “Continue” to finish the settings.
  6. The printer will then be ready to use.
